Wedding Gown Wednesday!

February 1

So, I am obsessed with this gown since I saw it this weekend at the Carolina Inn Bridal Show. I was stunned how this just floated down the runway!

In Vera’s words:

If there is any one dress in my Spring 2012 collection that epitomizes the pageantry of the Paris Opera, it’s Hayley. The centerpiece of this dress, for me, is the absolutely stunning, theatrical cascade of organza petals in the skirt, all cut from the most delicate tissue organza. They just float on the dress like a spilling bouquet. I did the petals in two tones: first, in a soft sand color, and then a nude, so it just gives you a complex tonality that’s a little more special.

For even more movement and excitement in the skirt, I’ve also used pleated honeycomb tulle—it gives you a whole other texture and volume underneath that petal effect. You almost picture Hayley swirling across the stage in a Degas painting.

The dropped-waist bodice features softly draped illusion organza over a corset. That transparency effect—that play between “reveal” and “conceal”—is one of my favorite techniques.

I’ve used all the textures in this dress, particularly in the petals, to give Hayley a rich, luxurious look, instead of going with traditional bling. For me, it’s about using fabric manipulations to make things look new and modern. And it’s also all about the motion in the whole gown, not the static detail. I love being able to achieve slouch and ease in a gown, and I always do this very purposefully, with layer upon layer of organic elements, as you see in Hayley. Getting that stunning combination of seemingly effortless beauty that’s so perfect and strategic: that’s what brings a dress together for me.

I like my bridal collections to be filled with unexpected touches—everything is very deliberately mixed up, assembled together, and then taken apart again, until I’ve found that perfect balance between architecture and effortlessness.

DIY Friday! Distressed Frames!

January 20

Happy DIY Friday! Distressed frames can add a rustic element to any wedding! They would be great for table numbers or displaying family pictures!

All you need is:

1. Wooden picture frame
2. Sand paper (we used 100 medium, with softer grit you can control the level of distressing better)
3. Paint brush
4. Candle
5. Regular paint in one color and white (you could easily add a second color in between the first color and white, just repeat the process of waxing and painting)

Paint the frame with your first color (pink for us). Make sure to sand your frame if it has a glossy finish so the paint will stick.

Allow paint to dry completely to the touch – about 25 minutes depending on the paint.

Liberally rub some candle wax on the frame. Do this especially where you would see heavy wear and tear over the years.  Don’t be shy with it!  Paint a second coat of your first color.

When the second coat of paint is dry, repeat the candle wax step. Then paint a coat of white and let dry.

Start scratching at the spots where you put the candle wax.. Fold the sand paper and make a sharp edge if you are using a sheet of sand paper.  Stop when you get to the pink (or your first color). You can distress as much or as little as you prefer!

We chose a subtle first color, but you could go bolder! Red and green could go under the white for a definite antique look!

How cute would these be with table numbers or your new house key? Happy Friday!

Erin

Tia’s Wedding Tip Thursday!!

January 19

Welcome to our new weekly blog feature: Tia’s Wedding Tip Thursday! Have you met Tia?

In a world of all-things-virtual, don’t underestimate the value of two simple books during your wedding planning. Yes, Pinterest is a wonderful tool and your iPhone can remind you of all the meetings and to do’s…but I have found nothing compares to a tiny notebook on your nightstand and a good three-ring binder.

That little book will be invaluable when you are almost asleep and realize you forgot to schedule your mani pedi appointment – just roll over, and jot it down. Or, if an idea about using a rickshaw for your grand exit comes to you in a dream – just put scribble it in that little book. You’ll be able to get plenty of beauty sleep knowing you’ve got it recorded and can deal with it in the morning. You can even carry this small booklet in your purse during the day so that you can write down any thought that comes to mind… before that thought passes.

The second book needs to be a big three-ring binder that will organize your ideas, inspiration and paperwork. I suggest making the first page your most current to do list and the second page a calendar. Include dividers for each vendor (ceremony, reception venue, caterer, music, florist, baker, rentals, stationary) as well as a section for wardrobe, beauty and general inspiration. After each divider, insert two or three plastic sleeve pockets. Then, include some notebook paper in each section. As you research vendors, write down their information, make notes during meetings, insert their proposals/menus/song lists, etc. and then once you book a vendor, remove all the other info except that which pertains to your chosen vendor. Use the plastic sleeves for their contract, and highlight and record due dates for deposits and headcounts. The plastic sleeves can also hold print outs from web photos or magazine pictures of anything you like. Walking into a florist with examples of what you love will help them understand your vision. And if you don’t have a vision, just start picking out anything you like and throw it in the notebook. A good vendor can work with that and help you develop a vision. This is also a great place to save fabric swatches for linen choices and sample card stock for invitations. When it comes to wardrobe and beauty, include pictures of everything from dresses, shoes and accessories (for you and the bridal party) to hairstyles, makeup, work out routines and nail colors. Walking into the MAC store and asking for that perfect Mulch eye shadow that you saw in a magazine is so much easier than looking for it!

The other thing that will happen as you gather your ideas is you will probably start seeing a trend…and then before you know it, you’ve developed your color scheme and are well on your way to knowing exactly what you want. You get the idea, right? So, before you do anything else, go buy these two books. I promise you’ll thank me later

Happy Planning!!
