Wedding Tip Thursday! Budgeting

May 11

When creating a budget, sooner is better than later. Meaning: it should be one of the first five things you do after you are engaged. Setting expectations early on will help avoid confusion, heart ache and lots of drama. If your parents are going to be involved, I like to suggest that each person – the bride and the groom – meet separately with their parents to discuss this sensitive subject. Then, the two of you can regroup and go from there. But remember, those who contribute financially to the wedding usually expect to have a say in the wedding plans. So don’t forget to also discuss roles and involvement in decision-making when the budget is discussed. Get it out in the open early on! After hearing the expectations of involvement from your relatives, you may decide it is best to pay for it on your own!
As far as who pays for what, there are a lot of traditional “rules” that you can follow…but the modern bride and groom can also feel comfortable making their own rules. Budget etiquette is quite flexible and there are several combinations of who is paying for what which are completely acceptable. If you’d like something to go on, a contemporary option is the “FLOP” method. Using this rule of thumb, the groom’s family pays for flowers, liquor, orchestra (music) and photography. In addition, the groom’s family also pays for the rehearsal dinner. The bride’s family would then pay for everything else.
Whatever you decide, decide early, stick to the plan, and don’t let money issues ruin your day. No matter what the budget or who is paying – you’ll still end up marrying the person of your dreams!

Happy Planning!!

Wedding Gown Wednesday! Reem Acra and Theia

May 9

Brides.com had a few designers sketch a fantasy gown Angelina Jolie’s upcoming wedding:

On the Left is the sketch from Reem Acra:

“When I envision Angelina in a wedding dress,” says designer-to-the-stars Reem Acra, “I am inspired by her classic elegance and effortless sex appeal. She is deliberate about her fashion choices and that sophisticated confidence makes for the perfect modern bride.” It’ll certainly take an Angelina-esque bravado to wear Acra’s ivory, double-faced silk crepe gown, which features a prominent center-cinched bodice, an off-the-shoulder neckline, and a flared skirt—the kind of figure-hugging silhouette that evokes the star’s steamier roles. One can even imagine Mrs. Smith slipping into such a gown, provided there’s room for a concealed weapon.

The gorgeous Sketch on the right is from Theia:

Seeing as how Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie got engaged for the sake of their six children, it’s only fitting that Theia Creative Director Don O’Neill chose family as his inspiration for Angie’s wedding gown. “I envisioned Angelina as a wholesome sophisticated vision of the bride that her children imagine her to be, not her sexy red carpet signature style,” he says. “This one is for her family.” O’Neill’s fantasy design features a long-sleeve silhouette of French Chantilly lace over a corseted sweetheart bodice in silk mousseline and organza with a tulle appliqué hem. “The dramatic silk tulle veil is trimmed with lace to add mystery and allure,” the designer adds.

Make it Pretty Monday: Etsy Registry!

May 7

Etsy is the world’s most creative marketplace of handmade items where artists can sell their items, and others can buy them. It has many categories from antique items, to clothing, but our favorite category is weddings! This past week Etsy has added a new option to their site, to create a wedding registry! On their registry you can add household and decor items, furniture, even electronics. One of the reasons why Erin McLean Events loves this registry idea, is because brides can also register for wedding decorations that they would like to have on their wedding day. This would be a great help especially if a bride and groom are paying for their own event. In addition to a wedding or shower gift, guests could choose to buy something to put towards the couples wedding day of their Etsy registry.

Here are some of EME’s favorite items that we have seen at weddings that are from Etsy that brides could add to their registry!

DIY Friday! Ribbon Table runner

May 4

Happy DIY Friday! This week we made a fun and simple table runner using ribbon! This would look great on a white tablecloth or on the table itself! It would add an elegant look to any event and would be fun to use at a dinner party with elegant white dishes and silver! This would look great on any shaped table and you could use any color. A long dining table could have more than one!

All you need is:

-  Ribbon (we used three different types and sizes)

- Sharp scissors!

Cut the ribbon long enough to hang over the edges of your table.

We cut the ribbon on a bias to keep it pretty!

Lay out the first direction of ribbon. We used 7 pieces for each direction.

Then start weaving them together! We used a basket weave because it is simple and clean looking.

When you have done them all, check your spacing and make sure it is straight and even!

You are ready to set your table!

Happy DIY Friday!
